Racing on the salt

I originally tried to post this on 8/31/09, but the post didn’t work out the way I wanted it to look.  I was so exhausted I gave up and did not get back to blog updating until tonight, 9/8/09.  Please forgive the lateness of my posts.  I will try to catch up.

We were on the salt early enough to see the sun rise.  Rider’s meeting started at 7:00.  After that we went through scrutineering.  I was a little worried that they might not approve my gloves.  They do not fit the letter of the rules, but they are good gloves with good protection.  The guy barely looked at them.  All of our gear was approved.  The bike had no trouble going through tech except they added a new rule this year, fuel lines must be fireproof.  Apparently our fuel lines are not metal mesh, so this year, since it’s a new rule, they told us to wrap aluminum foil around the gas lines to fireproof them.  Next year we have to have metal braided gas lines.  It did not make sense to me, but we did what we were told and they passed us.

Then we got in line for our first run.  We waited and waited and waited.  Fortunately it was not super hot this morning.  Finally we got our first tuning run.  The poor bike coughed and sputtered and blubbered.  Len took it straight back to the pitts.  The guys found a bad ground wire and fixed it.  We got back in line for a second run.   After baking in the sun for what seemed like forever we got a second run.  Len took the bike to 98.214 miles per hour.  Back to the pitts.  After some lunch, a jet change, an increase in tire pressure, and a gas fill-up we were ready for a third run.  We got back in line and waited and waited.   We baked in the hot sun.  The wind picked up and the track was put on hold.  There was a 16 mile an hour wind and they won’t let anyone run if it’s over 12 mile per hour wind.  It was 5:10 pm and the track closes at 6:00 pm.  There were 10 people ahead of us.  We decided to pack up and get out of the sun.  It was time to call it a day.  More racing tomorrow.
