Upcoming Event at York St. Cafe

George Remus Loves You: A Valentines Nod To A Historical and Local Figure of The Prohibition

On Saturday, February 13th, from 8pm to 12am, spend the night in the 20’s at York Street Café, in Newport, KY. George Remus Loves You will feature authentic big band sound provided by Swingtime Big Band, as well as period drinks provided by local cocktail celebrities Molly Wellmann and Jeannie Murray. Entrance is $10 at the door.

Molly Wellmann, a craft cocktail mixologist, was recently featured in “Cincinnati Magazine”, and the “Cincinnati Enquirer”. Jeannie Murray, formally of JeanRo Bistro and currently at The Comet, Hugo and R P Mc Murphy’s, is a local staple behind the bar.

The Swingtime Big Band is a full-size big band consisting of rhythm, sax, trombone, and trumpet sections with vocalists. Their repertoire includes the swing classics, smooth jazz, big band, ballads, waltzes, and Broadway.

Take a trip back to a time when romance was in the air and prohibition gave old George a thriving business. It was a time when ladies and gentlemen dressed for an evening of elegant cocktails, music, dancing, and, if they’re lucky, an evening free of police raids.

Who is George Remus?  He’s a famous Cincinnati Lawyer and Bootlegger.  He found loopholes in the prohibition laws allowing him to buy distilleries and pharmacies to sell liquor to himself for medicinal purposes.  He then hi-jacked his own liquor shipments and sold it illegally.  He was quite a scandalous character.  Check him out on Wikipedia:
